MPS (Miami Premier Soccer Club) awards Sportsmanship Scholarship Award to player Andrea Lopez to help assist with college expenses

Miami , June 2005 – MPS (Miami Premier Soccer Club), Dade County’s oldest all-girls soccer organization, is proud to announce it has established a Sportsmanship Scholarship Award called the Alex Caviglia Sportsmanship Award in memory of deceased Alex Caviglia, co-founder and former treasurer of the club, which will grant the recipient $1,000 to help with college expenses.

MPS has established that from now on, the Alex Caviglia Sportsmanship Scholarship is to be awarded on a yearly basis to one of the club’s many talented young soccer players, by merit of recommendation from club and school coaches and evaluation by a committee formed of club alumnae parents and directors. Attributes that are taken into consideration when coming up with the finalists for this award include qualities such as: displaying an outstanding attitude, unselfishness at practice and games, putting the success and well-being of the team before oneself, and last but not least: making a positive contribution to the local community. Each chosen finalist is also asked to submit an essay outlining their experiences with MPS and how they affected and improved them as a person.

Andrea Lopez, a soccer player since she was 5 years old, was nominated to be MPS’ first recipient for the Alex Caviglia Sportsmanship Scholarship. A Gulliver Academy graduate, Andrea played soccer at MPS for six years, was selected for First Team All-Dade soccer awards and acted as team captain for Gulliver Prep’s Soccer team, receiving that school’s All Around Award for demonstrating a combination of outstanding attitude, leadership and excellence both on and off the field. Andrea has volunteered countless hours to both her school and her soccer club, assisting with coaching at MPS Soccer Camps as well as at FIU’s Soccer Academy. She has been accepted at Loyola College in Maryland, where she will be majoring in Education and playing on their women’s soccer team.
